Price Guards: How to Protect Your Margins When You Test Prices on Shopify

A min and a max per product keep automated pricing inside the range you accept. How to set them, when to freeze, and how shoppers keep the price they saw.

Short answer: price guards are the minimum and maximum you set for each product. Automated pricing can only test prices inside that range, so it can never sell below your floor or above your ceiling, no matter what the data says.

Why Guards Come First

Handing prices to software is only safe when you decide the boundaries. Without them, a bad data day could push a price below cost, or above what your brand can carry. Guards keep you in charge of the range while the software handles the testing inside it.

How to Set Your Minimum (Floor)

  • Cost of goods: never sell below what the product costs you, including shipping and fees
  • Minimum acceptable margin: the lowest margin where a sale is still worth making
  • Brand position: some products should never look cheap, whatever demand says
  • MAP agreements: if a supplier sets a minimum advertised price, your floor starts there

How to Set Your Maximum (Ceiling)

  • Customer expectations: the highest price that still feels fair for what you sell
  • Alternatives: how far you can go before a shopper looks elsewhere
  • Room to learn: a ceiling right at your current price means the test can only go down; leave room above

Guards per Product or Variant

Different versions of a product can deserve different limits. In Rylo you set a store-wide min and max as a percent of each original price, then override it for any product or single variant. You also choose the test unit: each variant on its own, or the whole product at one shared price.

Guarding Trust: the Price Promise

Margin is one risk. Trust is the other. The Price Promise holds the first price a shopper sees on the product page, in the cart, and at checkout, for a window you choose (a session, 7 days, or up to 28). Testing keeps running, but no shopper ever watches their price change.

Freeze and Off

Freeze holds every price where it is, useful during a sale, a launch, or a busy holiday week. Off means off: every product goes back to its original price. You will rarely need either, but you should always have both.

Check the Log

Every price move is logged, so you can see what was tested and why. Review it weekly in your first month until the guards feel right, then check in monthly.

Find the most profitable price for every product.

Rylo runs several prices at once on live Shopify traffic and keeps the one with the highest profit per visitor. Each shopper keeps the price they saw.
